Some of the most important music from the past 70 years of the movement is collected in Let Freedom Sing, a new three-disc, 58-song Time Life collection that cuts across genres with voices both famous and obscure. The earliest recording in the set is Billie Holiday's 1939 anti-lynching tune Strange Fruit, though the Southern Son' 1941 Go Down Moses harks back further to spirituals and slavery field songs. The most recent, Free at Last by the Blind Boys of Alabama, was recorded in 2008... Saguaro Road Artist Blind Boys of Alabama win Grammy for Down in New Orleans February 10, 2009 — The Blind Boys of Alabama achieved an exceptional ‘perfecta’ at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles this past weekend. On Saturday, they received a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing the tremendous artistic success built during their 60 year-plus recording career. Then they won their fifth Grammy Award Sunday, taking home the trophy in the Best Traditional Gospel Album category for their 2008 release Down in New Orleans, which was produced by roots music producer Chris Goldsmith. Rarely has a band been honored for a lifetime of work and also for their most recent output at the same time. And they show no signs of slowing down. June 16, 2008 – One of the most popular and controversial series in television history, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, will soon be available for the first time on home video from Time Life. With content hand-picked by the legendary folk singing comedy duo Tom and Dick Smothers, the 5-DVD set includes 11 star-packed episodes from the third and final season of the hour-long variety show uncensored, as they were originally meant to be aired. The guest list for these episodes reads like a who’s who in ‘60s comedy and music; George Harrison, Harry Belafonte, Bob Newhart, Steve Martin, George Carlin, The Doors, Ray Charles, Jackie Mason, Cass Elliot, Jonathan Winters, Joan Baez and David Steinberg are just some of the names that appeared with the brothers in the 1968-1969 season.
