Throughout the years, the best-loved recording artists in country music have contributed memorable love songs to America’s musical landscape. It’s only natural that such heartfelt expressions would find their way into wedding ceremonies everywhere, from large cathedrals to rural churches and all points in between. This collection assembles 30 of the most potent country love songs of all time. Great music always helps set the tone for landmark events, and countless couples in love have turned to these emotionally charged songs for that special day when they begin life as man and wife.
These songs run the gamut from How Your Love Makes Me Feel, a buoyant anthem by Diamond Rio that reverberates with that joyous burst of emotion you get from falling in love, to the more subdued and stately ballad You Decorated My Life by Kenny Rogers, which eloquently captures the warmth of commitment. Country music veteran Clint Black and his wife, actress Lisa Hartman Black, deliver the gorgeous When I Said I Do, a tender tribute to living those wedding vows. Clint is also featured solo on the poignant Something That We Do.
From current hit makers such as Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney to such legends as three-time Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year winners Alabama and the late Keith Whitley, Country Wedding Songs brings you some of the biggest names in country music. Feels So Right, one of the cornerstones of Alabama’s acclaimed career, showcases one of lead vocalist Randy Owen’s most sensual performances. It’s the perfect song for couples seeking a romantic ballad to accompany their first dance as husband and wife. You’ll also hear one of country’s most beloved classics, When You Say Nothing at All, recorded by the legendary Keith Whitley. Though the Kentucky native passed away in 1989, he continues to influence today’s generation of country contenders. When You Say Nothing at All hit No. 1 on the Billboard country chart in 1988 and remains a cherished slice of Whitley’s musical legacy.
Not a Moment Too Soon takes Tim McGraw fans back to the early days of his career. The title track of his second album, Not a Moment Too Soon topped the country chart in 1995. The album became the catalyst that turned McGraw from floundering artist into bona fide star and earned him the Academy of Country Music’s 1994 Album of the Year Award. Two People Fell in Love is another early career song, by multi-platinum singer-songwriter-guitarist Brad Paisley. It was the first hit single from Paisley’s sophomore Arista Records album, Part II. According to the West Virginia native, the song (which he co-wrote with Kelley Lovelace and Tim Owens) “is about the fact that you can trace everything back to two people’s romance. The reason you’re here, the reason I’m here is our parents saw something in one another, fell in love, and we’re the product. It goes back to everybody that’s ever been born. It’s like a snapshot of real life that’s set in motion because you see it happening. You hear these stories throughout the song; there’s three different scenarios about people that fell in love and changed their little part of the world by doing so.”
As Paisley so eloquently states in his song, love changes lives, and that eternal truth is celebrated over and over in the music on this collection. Love Is Alive is a classic from the Judds’ acclaimed repertoire, while No Doubt About It is a smooth, sultry tune that topped the charts for Texas entertainer Neal McCoy. Mark Wills’s I Do (Cherish You) has been embraced by brides and grooms looking for a song that echoes exactly what they are longing to say on their special day. In the same vein, John Michael Montgomery’s anthem I Swear helps couples declare their feelings. Written by Gary Baker and Frank J. Myers, the song was a No. 1 country hit for Montgomery and then crossed over to pop radio. The song was also recorded by the R&B/pop group All-4-One; their version became an international hit and held the No. 1 spot on the pop chart here in the U.S. for 11 weeks.
Country Wedding Songs is populated by some of the most esteemed voices in country music, among them Vince Gill, whose numerous accolades include 18 CMA Awards and 20 Grammy Awards. Here you’ll find Vince delivering When Love Finds You, which earned him the 1994 Grammy for Best Country Male Vocal Performance. Country traditionalist Randy Travis has won six Grammy Awards and five CMA trophies. This collection features one of the North Carolina native’s most requested classics, Forever and Ever, Amen, which won the CMA Award for Single of the Year in 1987.
The influence of Canada’s musical exports can also be heard here. Four-time Grammy winner Anne Murray is represented by Could I Have This Dance, one of the best-loved songs to emerge from the John Travolta–Debra Winger film Urban Cowboy. The beautiful ballad earned Murray the 1980 Grammy in the Best Country Vocal Performance category and has become a staple at weddings all over the world. Canada’s Paul Brandt also contributes a favorite wedding song to this collection with his border-crossing hit I Do.
Weighing in from a feminine perspective, Jo Dee Messina serves up Stand Beside Me, a powerful number that paints a portrait of what women are looking for in a man. Collin Raye’s Love, Me has a different message. One of the most beautiful love stories ever set to music, it chronicles a couple’s relationship from their tender youth to their final days. The song was Collin’s first No. 1 record, spending three weeks at the top of the country chart in 1992.
The songs in this collection represent some of country music’s most celebrated compositions. However, it’s not the awards or chart activity that comes to mind when one hears these songs. It’s the loving moments they symbolize and the life experiences they reflect that strike a chord with everyone who hears them.
